Author’s Note
This lab was developed in 2023 by Rebecca Godard, a PhD student in psychology at the University of British Columbia, under the supervision of Dr. Jan Cioe.
This lab is intended to be an asynchronous, online lab component to supplement the material taught in PSYO 271, Introduction to Data Analysis (see here for a past syllabus). The lab is designed to take students 1–2 hours per week with support from a teaching assistant as necessary. Each lab contains the following components:
- Videos on how to conduct analyses in R Commander and SPSS. Students should follow along on their own computers.
- Videos on how to interpret the output generated by R Commander and SPSS in the previous videos.
- Step-by-step instructions, with screenshots, on reporting the results of the analysis from the previous videos in APA format.
- A “Check Your Understanding” exercise with solutions. Students should complete this exercise on their own and check their answers to ensure they have completed the analysis correctly.
- An assignment that assesses students’ ability to conduct and report the analysis taught in the lab. To support academic integrity, each student will receive their own unique dataset.
