You are a clinical psychologist who is interested in factors that predict depressive symptom severity. Based on prior research, you hypothesize that people who report higher levels of social support will report less severe depressive symptoms.

You collect data from 61 individuals who have received a diagnosis of major depressive disorder. For each participant, you record information on each of the following variables:

• id: Research ID
• bdi: Score on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), which is a measure of depressive symptoms. Scores range from 0–63, with higher scores indicating more severe depressive symptoms.
• mspss: Score on the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), which measures social support from family, friends, and a significant other. Scores range from 7–84, with higher scores indicating greater perceived social support.
